Woah not been here in a while....

Plans have changed abit since my last post. Good thing i posting a up my rough Project brief so everyone can now see.

Fmp Brief

Main Brief
To recreate the restaurant inside of the LAX Theme building. The final piece will be placed into the Unreal Development Kit Engine. This will allow me to light the area in a realistic manner, whilst also allowing interactive elements to be present.

Size/Layout
Given the timescale to complete this project the level will consist of the areas assessable by the public. These areas include: The restaurant floor, the toilets and the lift to the restaurant. The surrounding area of the building will be built, but only to be viewed from the restaurant windows.

Style
The Building itself is of Googie architecture and was originally built in the 60’s. The Assets and building should be of realistic graphics. I will use photos and original sketches of the building as my source of reference. The building and assets will be made to complement each other in colour and form as they do in real life.

Technical Specifications
The project will be made to current gen specifics (e.g. Xbox 360).
Tri count:
50,000 tris for the interior and assets in the restaurant
10,000 tris for the outside environment and legs of the buildings
60MB texture space for the whole level.

Managed to get some reference from my local retro bar back home at the weekend. I don't like the decor, but it's good to have something to work from.

I've managed to do some quick layout sketches too. I forgot to scan them in the labs today, even though i took them in with me. So they should hopefully be up tomorrow.

Disco research

I haven’t got any of my film collection with me at Uni. So I walked into town and purchased Boogie Nights and Carlito’s Way on DVD with the ten pound note I had in my pocket. I’ve skimmed watched them both and taken screen shots of the club scenes in the movie that I like.

I’ve arranged them in mood boards below. This obviously isn’t all my research; I was in town doing other research and figured I could kill two birds with one stone.

Hello and welcome to the start of my FMP. As this is meant to be my opportunity of freedom in what I want to do. I have a great love for 70’s and 80’s music, amongst other eras. I was thinking of creating a disco from either the 70’s or 80’s.

I obviously wasn’t old enough to experience either the 70’s or the 80’s so I only have what I have seen and read to go on. Films such as Studio 54, Carlitto’s way, Saturday Night fever etc. have shaped my ideas of the sort of disco I want to create. Smoke machines, neon lights and patterned furniture will feature heavily.

My first point of action is to gather reference from modern day retro bars and nightclubs to look at layouts of space. At the same time I will be looking at films, documentaries and pictures of discos of the time. From the reference gathered I will start to produce concepts of the space and layout of the disco. A main ingredient in a disco is music. Due to copyright laws I can’t use any of my all-time favourite 70’s, 80’s music. Fortunately I have a brother who is a very talented musician who has agreed to let me use some of his music. He also offered to produce one off music for the level if I want to set a certain mood. So I’m going to draw up a document of agreement between myself and my brother that I will include in my documentation during the project.

My rough timeline for the project so far looks like this:

Week 1-2 Research/ Gathering reference and producing mood boards
Week 2-5 Concepting/ Producing various layout and styles of disco
Week 5-6 Asset list/ I will compose a list of assets I want to place in the level
Week 6-9 Asset creation/ Creating the assets in max with no textures
Week 9-11 White boxing/ Producing the level in UDK and positioning the assets

This should hopefully take me up to the Christmas break, I have obviously considered that I have other work on at the same time when drawing up the timetable and I’m well aware that I may fall behind schedule one week but also I may get ahead of schedule on others.
